Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships 2027-2028

The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships 2027-2028 support Indian PhD scholars who need to conduct research in the United States as part of their doctoral programme. The fellowship funds living costs, tuition and required fees while the scholar is abroad. It is designed for candidates whose research is forward-looking, technology-oriented and aligned with key priority areas shared by India and the U.S.

Selected fellows audit courses, gain practical experience and build long-term academic capacity in both countries.

Applicants must be registered for a PhD at an Indian institution at the time of application. They should have completed coursework and passed all required examinations before the fellowship begins. There are no minimum marks or income thresholds, but preference is given to candidates with strong academic records and research proposals.

The scheme is open to all Indian citizens regardless of caste, gender or disability status.

Submit an online application through the United States-India Educational Foundation portal before the published deadline. Prepare a detailed research proposal, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and a letter from the Indian PhD supervisor confirming registration and the relevance of the research. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
