About the ACT
The ACT consists of four academic sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing section. The English section tests grammar, punctuation, and rhetorical skills. The Mathematics section covers algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
The Reading section evaluates comprehension of passages from literature, social science, and natural science. The Science section assesses interpretation, analysis, and problem-solving skills in the natural sciences. The optional Writing section measures essay-writing ability.
Together, these sections provide a comprehensive evaluation of a student’s academic preparation for college-level coursework.
