In 1997, AUS was founded by Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah. The university got licensed by UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 1998. Nobel Laureate and renowned economist Dr. Thomas Sargent visited AUS in 2013.
