The institute started as the BC Vocational School in Burnaby. The Burnaby campus officially opened and welcomed the first batch of almost 500 students in 1964 to enrol in Engineering, Business, and Health programs. The Sea Island campus opened in 1977 to offer aircraft maintenance programs.
In 1986, the institute merged with the Pacific Vocational Institute. In 2002, the institute became joint-owners of the new Great Northern Way campus along with UBC, SFU, and Emily Carr.
