The university began as the State College for Alameda County thanks to the efforts of the California State Assembly in 1957. The first academic year began in 1959 as part of the Sunset High School in Cherryland. The first batch had around 293 students and 25 faculty members. The 1970s saw the opening of several new buildings.
It expanded to Contra Costa County in 1992, after opening a branch in Concord. It took over its present-day name in 2005.
