History

Cleveland State University was established as a state-assisted university in the year 1964. The historical roots of CSU go back to the 19th century. During the 1880s, the Cleveland YMCA began to offer day and evening courses to students who did not otherwise have access to higher education. In 1906, the YMCA program was recognized as the Associate Institute and this in turn was established as Fenn College in 1929. Then, in 1964, the State of Ohio purchased the entire Fenn College’s campus in downtown Cleveland. This new institute then became Cleveland State University. James J. Nance served as Chair of the first Board of Trustees. For the next few decades, Cleveland State University grew in size and claimed more than 15,000 students in 1997. The Cleveland-Marshall College of Law traces its origins to 1897 when Cleveland Law School was established. Another evening school, John Marshall School of Law was founded in 1916. Later on, in 1946, these two schools merged to become the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law. Finally, in 1969 Cleveland-Marshall became a part of Cleveland State University.
