History

Originally known as William J. Porter University, Jacksonville University was founded in 1934. Then in 1935, the name was changed to Jacksonville Junior College. In 1958, Jacksonville Junior College merged with Jacksonville College of Music and name was changed to Jacksonville University. In 1961, College of Fine Arts was established and university received full accreditation as 4 year institution. Then, in 1967, the College of Arts and Sciences was established. In 1979, College of Business was established. In 2009, JU celebrated 75 year anniversary. In 2020, university created 2 schools within Linda Berry Stein College of Fine Arts- School for Performing Arts and School of Art and Design.
