History
Missouri State was founded in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School. The institution's primary goal in its early years was to prepare instructors for the public school districts of southwest Missouri. In 1906, the school's first class began with 543 students, using off-campus facilities. That same year, the school chose maroon and white as its colors for the 1906-07 academic year. In 1909, the first building on the Springfield campus, Academic Hall, was completed. In 1919, the school was renamed Southwest Missouri State Teachers College, replacing the original name.
