Montclair State University History
MSU New Jersey began when Governor John Franklin took part in the opening ceremony of the New Jersey State Normal School. In 1915, the College's first dorm, The Russ Hall, opened. Charles S. Chapin took over as the first principal of the institute. 1929 saw William O. Trapp, one of the university's first graduates, win the Pulitzer Prize.
By 1932, the institute finally became authorized to give out its own master's degrees. The institutes' operations halted during the Second World War, but after the war ended, war veterans enrolled in huge numbers in 1947. In 1949, the New Jersey School of Conservation was set up. The institute continued its expansion over the rest of the 20th century.
