NTU Singapore History & Background

NTU began as the Nanyang Technological Institute in 1981 to create engineers with practical experience to support the country's economy. It welcomed its first batch of 582 UG Engineering students in 1982 to the former campus of the Nanyang University. In 1991, it incorporated the National Institute of Education and took over its present-day name. All alumni rolls of the Nanyang University were transferred to it in 1996. In 2006, NTU became an autonomous university (all university operations taken care of by the Singapore government).
