A hallmark of Central New York is the fall foliage. This year, however, the Norway maples seem to have got a jump start on autumn, but not in a good way. State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. today celebrated SUNY ESF’s Timbuctoo Climate Science and Careers Summer Institute program for New York City high school students. The institute is named after Timbuctoo, a historic black suffrage settlement in the mid-1800s, located in the Adirondacks, that created electoral access and opportunity. The program connects students, particularly those from underrepresented communities, with hands-on environmental research, mentorship, and career exploration opportunities.

Building on a successful partnership, the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) and the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance (VCPA) are continuing to invest in the next generation of environmental leaders through the Garden 2 Market and Urban Ecology Teen Internship programs. These transformative initiatives provide Bronx high school students with immersive experiences in environmental science, ecological restoration, urban agriculture, and college-level learning.

ESF, in partnership with the Syracuse Pulp & Paper Foundation (SPPF), will welcome 35 rising high school seniors to its Syracuse campus for the first-ever Explore Engineering Summer Program, taking place Aug. 2–7, 2026.
