History

The history of Texas A&M University goes back to 1862. The Texas Legislature established the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in 1871. In October 1876, the college began instruction with 40 students. By the early 1900s, the college started offering programs in Engineering, an Agriculture program, and an Architecture program. Finally, in 1963, the Texas Legislature changed the school’s name from the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas to Texas A&M University.
