The Ohio State University history dates back to 1870, when the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College was established by the Ohio General Assembly, the land for which was made available, thanks to the land-grant act passed by, then US President, Abraham Lincoln. The first day of classes of the university took place in 1873. In 1876, the college established a fixed curriculum for the first two years of schooling. 1878 saw the institute rename to Ohio State Universty.

In 1968, the Ohio State College of Arts and Sciences divide into five colleges: Arts, Biological Sciences, Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences and Mathematical and Physical Sciences. In 2010, the OSU College of Arts and Sciences was reunified.
