History

In 1632, Gerardus Vossius opened the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam. Then, in 1815, the Athenaeum Illustre was officially recognized as an institution of higher education. In 1877, the municipality of Amsterdam gave the Athenaeum Illustre university status. The university continued its expansion by introducing new faculties and subjects. It also added specialisms between 1917 and 1931 and saw an increase in students from 1100 to 2500. Its status as a municipal university came to an end in 1961, and it began receiving its funding from the government.

Can I pay my tuition fees in instalments at Amsterdam University?

Yes, students can pay their tuition fees in instalments at the UvA Holland. Students can request a payment arrangement via Studielink if they have difficulty paying their fees. As part of the arrangement, students would have to make sure to pay their dues on time. The regular debits will remain in effect. The payment arrangement will be considered null, if students fail to pay their fees on time.

This would mean students would be unable to log in to their UvAnetID and may face consequences related to enrolment.
