The Kassel University began after the Hessian State Government decided to start the first comprehensive university in Germany in 1970. The State Parliament passed the law for the start of the same in June of the same year.
The university welcomed its first batch of 2,913 students in the winter semester of the 1971/72 academic session. In 1993, the convention decided to rename it to Universitat Gesamthochschule Kassel. It took over its present-day name in 2002.
