History

The university started as a teaching college, the Lowell Normal School, in 1894, and the Lowell Textile School in 1895, to train managers and technicians for the textile industry. Both these institutions served the growing needs of skilled individuals in the region for 75 years.

These two merged in 1975 to become the University of Lowell. It joined the UMass system in 1991.
