History

Classes at the University of Kansas City (UKC) started in 1933. However, the history of this university can be traced back to the 1920s. In 1930, 80 students became the first graduating class of the university. In 1947, the university opened admissions to students of all races. Then, in 1953, the School of Business Administration was established. Finally, in 1963, after three decades of being a private institution, the financial instability of UKC led it to become a part of the University of Missouri system. Throughout the 1980s – 90s, UMKC saw a steady growth in several areas. In 1999, this university achieved a Carnegie-level Research II status. In 2010, the university saw a dramatic increase in enrollment, rising to 13,500 students.
