History
UNCG was established in 1891. The institution finally opened in 1892 with a student body of 198. The university was earlier known as the State Normal school and Industrial School. During 1919-1931, the university was known as the North Carolina College for Women. From 1932-1963, UNCG was one of the three branches of the consolidated University of North Carolina.
