Though it opened officially in 1361, the university's history can be traced back to the year 825, when the Lothair capitulary's emperor set up a school of rhetoric for officials of the kingdom. Fast forward to 1931, and Charles IV started a school which offered literary and legal education to students. It continued to expand its network over the following years, also setting up a campus in Cremona, and educated several popular medical professionals like Caro Forlanini and Camillo Golgi. Today, it operates 2 faculties, 18 departments, and offers more than 80 degree courses to its students.
